Do I need to learn Chinese characters?
You start with them. Every item in the 30-day course is written in simplified characters with pinyin beside it and every tone marked, so the characters are in front of you from Day 1 while the pinyin carries the pronunciation. You can hold basic conversations without reading characters.
What are the four tones in Mandarin?
Mandarin has four tones: first tone (flat, high), second tone (rising), third tone (dipping), and fourth tone (falling). The same syllable means different things depending on the tone, so tones are not an accent you can add later — they are part of the word. Get them right early and everything after is easier.
Can children learn Mandarin on KindLearn?
Not yet. The Kids Zone currently teaches Spanish, French, German, Italian and Portuguese — Mandarin is not among them, and we would rather say so than have a child open an empty lesson. They are chosen by how often you will actually meet them, so the course opens with greetings & introductions, numbers & counting, essential courtesy rather than colours and animals. Earlier days come back at widening intervals, so a word introduced on day 1 returns on days 2, 4 and 8.
Is Mandarin hard for English speakers?
The US Foreign Service Institute classifies Mandarin as Category IV, estimating roughly 2200 hours of study to professional working proficiency — among the most demanding, due to tones and characters. The first 30 days are the easiest part of that curve, which is why a short structured start is worth more than it sounds.
What should I learn first in Mandarin?
The words you will need in the first five minutes of any conversation, in this order: greetings & introductions, numbers & counting, essential courtesy, about yourself. Day 1 is: say hello, give your name, and thank someone. Many courses open with colours and animals instead; those are easy to teach and rarely the thing you need to say first.
