What Portuguese looks like in the first 30 days
- Obrigado or obrigada (Day 1) agrees with you, the speaker: a man says obrigado and a woman says obrigada.
- The nasal ão has no English equivalent: não, no (Day 3), and o cartão, the card (Day 8).
- lh and nh are ly and ny: o filho, the son (Day 11), and vermelho, red (Day 13); uma caipirinha (Day 5).
- Brazilian words throughout: o ônibus, the bus (Day 15), is autocarro in Portugal.

For learners of English, Cambridge English suggests about 90–100 guided learning hours to reach CEFR A1, as a guideline. We would rather say that than sell you a month to fluency.

Is Portuguese similar to Spanish?
Very close in writing, and a Spanish speaker will recognize much of the vocabulary. The pronunciation differs more than the spelling suggests — the nasal ão, lh and nh, and the r at the start of a word — so those are the sounds to practice first.

Day 1 is: say hello, give your name, and thank someone correctly. Colors and animals are easy to teach, but they are rarely the first thing you need to say.
